As part of the Weatherhead Center’s Spotlight series that showcases the research and debates of various clusters and programs, several members of the Research Cluster on Comparative Inequality and Inclusion presented their work on April 3, 2024.

With the theme of comparing the processes of inclusion and exclusion, affiliates Luca Carbone, Camille Hamidi, Riva Katoryano, and Mari Sanchez gave engaging presentations and provided illuminating insights into their findings in this panel chaired by Michèle Lamont.

[Luca Carbone](/people/luca-carbone-0) presented on “Adolescents’ Meritocratic Beliefs and Their Favorite Music: Pathways toward Internalization.” Luca seeks to understand the daily effects of exposure to meritocratic narratives in music on adolescents’ mental health. In particular, Luca theorizes about the deployment of various cultural repertoires used by adolescents to face the pressures of increasingly meritocratic societies and empirically study their contribution on adolescents’ well- being and ill-being (e.g., performance pressure, anxiety).

[Camille Hamidi](/people/camille-hamidi-0)’s project, “Nonprofits Promoting Equal Opportunity in French Education: What Is Their Success a Case Of?” fits with her larger research agenda analyzing the role nonprofits play in local political systems.

[Riva Kastoryano](/people/riva-kastoryano-0) presented on her project, “Transnationalism: A Challenge to Multiculturalism,” which dissects the tensions between multiculturalism and transnationalism, as the latter is challenging multiculturalism through its effect on citizenship and integration.

Lastly, [Mari Sanchez](/people/mari-sanchez) presented work from her dissertation, “Non-White Meta-Categories in the United States and United Kingdom: Unpacking the Language of Racial Difference and Justice,” which dissects the recent unsettled nature behind the “non-white meta-categories” in the United States and United Kingdom.
