Research interests: Economic sociology, war, migration, money and pricing, ethnography, experiments and the Middle East, with special focus on Syria.
Gozde is examining the institution of hawala, an informal money transfer system that has become the primary channel for sending money into, out of, and across Syria during its post-2011 civil war. Her field research integrates diverse methods of data collection including ethnography, field experiments, and interviews. This year she will work on her book manuscript, which elucidates the mechanisms that allow informal institutions like hawala to adapt to crisis situations such as protracted conflict and forced migration.
