Portrait of Keye Tersmette

Research interests: Citizenship under authoritarian government, borders and borderlands in the Arabian Peninsula, Omani conceptions of and participation in the modern Omani nation and state.

Keye is analysing fieldwork data collected in Oman’s borderlands with the UAE between 2015 and 2020, and conducting online and archival research in the UK. Positing the borderlands as marginal spaces where the modern state must manage or pacify a newly national population, his PhD research analyses how the Omani state’s models for the nation and national citizenship mesh — and clash — with Omanis’ understandings, articulations, and enactments of belonging.
